Statutory Regulation’s most important role is to protect the public. As things stand anyone can call themselves a counsellor or psychotherapist. Professional Bodies can only address issues arising in relation to their own members, be that in offering support to their members or in processing a complaint against a member. This leaves some practitioners beyond the responsibility of any monitoring body in relation to training standards, competence, ethical practice and complaints.
