Welcome to the IACP e-Newsletter

Dear Members,

Welcome to the first IACP e-News. The e-News is intended to provide you with a brief update of events, activities and developments that IACP is involved in and represented at, outside of the notices and company information in the “Noticeboard” section of Eisteach.
We are endeavoring to improve communication and we’re particularly keen not to overload members with information/emails and will therefore keep the e-News short and relevant and provide links to further reading in some cases. All of the information will also be available on our website.

Naoise Kelly, National Director.

‘The Future of Mental Healthcare’

Mental-health-conf_1‘The Future of Mental Healthcare’ – Mental Health Conference 2010 took place in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin on Thursday 16th September 2010. IACP’s Professional Services Manager, Shane Kelly represented the IACP on the day.

The one-day conference looked at the roles of those involved in the healthcare sector in delivering a sustainable mental health strategy. The role of the public sector, the private sector, the media and the legal profession were debated. The morning session focused on ‘Caring for Children’ while the afternoon session centered on ‘Caring for Adults’.

Speaking at the conference Minister of State for Mental Health John Moloney said “the reality” was that €700 million needed to be cut from the health budget and that he faced a challenge to ensure mental health service were protected. He said the Government was experiencing difficulties generating €50 million that had been pledged to the sector from the sale of land, which was attributed to the economic downturn.

Also speaking on the day was John Lonergan, a native of Bansha, County Tipperary. He served for over 42 years in the Irish Prison Service until his retirement in June, 2010. He was Governor of Mountjoy Prison for over 20 years and also served as Governor of the top security prison in Portlaoise for 4 years.

Over the years he has argued that there's a direct link between poverty, mental illness and criminality. He believes that one of the biggest challenges facing us as a society is to break that link by developing a strategic and well resourced response based on early and appropriate intervention rather than depending on popular but costly and low achieving reactionary policies.

John Lonergan said “Most people who end up in prison come from very disadvantaged areas, about 90 per cent of them are poor people,” he said. “Their environments, I believe, contribute significantly to their development or underdevelopment. As a result of that, criminality is an option for them that wouldn’t be if they had grown up somewhere else.”

John Lonergan will also speak at the IACP Public Information Day in the Mansion House on Saturday 20th November 2010.

American University Group

usaA presentation on the work of IACP was delivered to a group of post-grad students from the Counselling Program at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA in August. The group were on a ten day “study institute” at Trinity College, Dublin and were looking at comparative issues and practice in Irish Counselling and Psychotherapy. The presentation and exchange worked very well and an unexpected bonus was the attendance of Dr. Ted Remley. Dr. Remley is a Lawyer, Counsellor, Head of the University programme and a former Executive Director of the American Counseling Association. He is often described as the man who ‘led the fight’ for counselling licensure (regulation) in the U.S. Since last year counselling is regulated in all states in the U.S., with California being the final state to be regulated in 2009 and Virginia was the first state (1976). Dr. Remley was involved in the process in many of those states. He was very pleased to make the IACP contact and offered to assist IACP in the future. On behalf of the IACP he was presented with a pen and letter opener set which he said he would “proudly display in the case outside our department office at our university”.
