Welcome to the IACP e-Newsletter

 

Dear Members,

Welcome to the second IACP e-News (email newsletter). The e-News is intended to provide you with a brief update of events, activities and developments that IACP is involved in and represented at, outside of company notices and information in the “Noticeboard” section of Éisteach.

In order to avoid overloading members with information/emails, the e-Newsletters are kept short and provide links to further reading in some cases. All of the information is also available on our website.

IACP AGM 2011

5569542340_b7a4ee2191_b-1The 2011 IACP AGM was held on Saturday the 26th March 2011 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone, County Westmeath. The event was a great success with with over 280 members attending.

A brief overview of the event follows:

 

A social / networking evening was held on Friday the 25th and feedback received was that it was a highly enjoyable evening for the 130 attendees. Many thanks to the Midlands Regional Committee (pictured in the Gallery) for successfully hosting the event.

Elections

Following the AGM Election, the Executive Committee for 2011/2012 is:

Motions

The following motion was passed:

The Northern Ireland Committee propose that a new reduced rate be introduced for annual subscription for Counsellors/Psychotherapists who are senior citizens over the age of 65, and that the Executive determines the reduction - in line with other professional bodies.

 

Carl Berkeley Memorial Award 2011

The Carl Berkeley Memorial Award is open to all those who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of counselling and psychotherapy in Ireland. The recipient of the award for 2011 was Ursula O'Farrell. Many congratulations to Ursula! On the day Patricia Kennedy accepted the award on Ursula's behalf. See photo in Gallery. The text of the acceptance speech will be on the website in the coming weeks.

Shane Kelly – Professional Services Manager on RTÉ 1 – 'Four Live'

fourlive1On Monday 28 March 2011 Shane Kelly (IACP’s Professional Services Manager) appeared on the RTÉ 1 'Four Live' television programme.

Shane was discussing ‘Dinner table Dilemmas - Children who won't Eatwith presenter Maura Derrane. His appearance received very positive feedback and was a great success for the IACP.

Despite the producers error in attaching the title of 'Psychologist' to Shane, this was a very valuable opportunity secured for the IACP with regards to both national publicity and making connections within the Irish media.

 

 

IACP Article in the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) Journal – 'Forum'

IGCP-1

IACP is now working more closely with the Medical Profession, Healthcare Professionals and the HSE. As part of this work, the May 2011 edition of the ICGP 'Forum' Journal will contain an article reintroducing IACP to General Practitioners.

The article introduces the IACP to General Practitioners and explains the benefits that counselling and psychotherapy have to offer. It gives a professional overview of the association and highlights both the services provided by the IACP and also how to contact its members. 'Forum' is circulated to all General Practitioners in active practice in Ireland. www.icgp.ie

 

 

IACP engaging with Goverment/Politicians

IACP continues to engage with Government/Politicians through our call for Statutory Regulation. All newly elected TDs are being contacted and IACP will be holding a meeting with Dan Neville TD (Fine Gael Spokesman on Mental Health) in Dáil Éireann on Tuesday 12 April 2011. We also look forward to meeting with the new Minister of State for Mental Health, Kathleen Lynch.

Deputy Neville (pictured) is the Fine Gael Spokesman on Mental Health and has proposed a Private Members Bill to have Counselling and Psychotherapy regulated in Ireland. He also spoke at the IACP Public Information Day in November 2010.

 

 

IACP Leaflets to Garda Stations

Following the distribution of IACP Information Leaflets to all GPs nationwide, over the next two weeks these useful leaflets will be distributed to all Garda Stations nationwide.The leaftlets are:

1. “Talk to us” – A Guide to Counselling & Psychotherapy - provides clear information for the General Public on Counselling / Psychotherapy and the work and services of the IACP and its Members.

2. “A Guide to Professional Accreditation and membership” - provides information on accreditation criteria and membership benefits to persons considering or working towards professional accreditation.

There are over 720 Garda Stations nationwide.
